Family Memories. Family Traditions

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday observed by many Mexicans and Hispanics in Mexico and the United States. For many Mexican families, observing the holiday has been a tradition for centuries. Many people observe the holiday in many different ways that are special and meaningful to them. The holiday is used to gather with friends and family to remember loved ones who have passed. Some people honor the dead by building altars and decorating them with sugar skulls, marigolds, foods like pan de muerto or other favorite items, and beverages. During my childhood, we never observed the holiday with fiestas or parades. Growing up in Los Angeles, it wasn't something many people celebrated publicly like many cities in Mexico. Many members of my family would have mini altars displayed in their homes throughout the year.

I have chosen to observe the holiday differently than I did while I was a child. And it's also different from how my mother would observe the holiday when she was growing up. When my mother was a child, my grandparents would take the family to Mexico every year so they can spend time with family and visit the graves of the friends and family who have passed. While there, they would clean the graves and leave gifts. Most of their day was spent at the graves sites honoring the dead with lunch, snacks and beverages.

In remembrance of those who I've lost, I plan on celebrating Dia De Los Muertos with love, memories and color. I want them to celebrate it with friends and family with fiestas, parades and altars to remember those who have passed. And where their are celebrations, there's always good food and beverages.
